DRM and PDFs: what is realistic

People often want a PDF that "cannot be copied or forwarded." Understanding why that is nearly impossible saves a lot of wasted effort.

The analogue hole

Anything a person can read, they can screenshot or photograph. No document format can fully prevent that.

What helps instead

• Encryption to control who can open it at all.
• Visible watermarks tying a copy to a recipient.
• Access via expiring links rather than permanent files.
