Editing PDFs
How to edit text in a PDF
PDFs store text by position, not as flowing paragraphs, so you cannot just click and retype the way you would in Word. Here is how editing actually works — and how to do it cleanly.
Why it is different
Each line is drawn at fixed coordinates using an embedded font subset. There is no paragraph model to reflow, which is exactly why a PDF looks the same everywhere.
The reliable method
- Cover the original text with a matching background (whiteout).
- Place a new text box in the same spot with a matching font and size.
- Type the replacement and align it to the surrounding lines.
When to rebuild instead
For heavy changes, it is faster to edit the source document and re-export the PDF. Use in-PDF editing for fixes: a typo, a date, a name, a price.
